During natural conception, sperm have to travel from the vagina through the cervix, into the uterus, and up to the fallopian tubes. This process can increase the likelihood of pregnancy in certain couples who have had difficulty getting pregnant. IUI is a relatively noninvasive and less-expensive fertility treatment compared to more invasive and costly treatments such as in vitro fertilization IVF.
Data about the optimal timing of IUI are based on inseminations following ovarian stimulation. There is no available evidence regarding the correct timing of IUI in a natural menstrual cycle following the occurrence of a spontaneous LH rise. The subjects were randomized to receive insemination either 1 or 2 days after the observed LH rise.
It is safe and affordable making it an excellent option for many women. Doctors use hormone blood tests and monitoring scans to keep track of the cycle and pinpoint the time at which ovulation occurs, then they introduce the sperm into the uterus in a simple non-invasive theatre procedure. The lack of fertility drugs and medical procedures means that IUI is the safest form of fertility treatment and avoids the potential side effects that come with some forms of IVF.
It is a simpler, less invasive form of fertility treatment. The semen sample is analysed and washed to concentrate the motile sperm. The final prepared sample is used for insemination where it is gently inserted into the uterine cavity using a speculum and a small catheter.
Artificial insemination, or Interuterine Insemination IUIis often recommended as an initial fertility treatment, before moving on to more IVF and other more sophisticated treatments. If you or your partner has been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, hostile cervical mucus, minor sperm abnormalities or other male disorders, it is sometimes a successful option. It can also be used where semen has been frozen due to a husband's absence or before chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Sperm donation is the provision or "donation" by a man known as a sperm donor of his sperm known as donor spermprincipally for it to be used in the artificial insemination of a woman or women who are not his sexual partners for the purpose of achieving a pregnancy. Sperm may be donated publicly and directly to the intended donor, or through a sperm bank or fertility clinic. Sperm donation enables a man to father a child for third-party women, and is therefore, categorized as a form of third party reproduction.
Donor insemination DI is the process of inseminating a woman with sperm obtained from a known or anonymous donor. The procedure is usually performed in natural cycles without the use of any fertility medications. However, fertility medication may be recommended for women in their late 30's and older, and for those who have been unsuccessful with donor insemination in natural cycles, in order to increase the number of eggs for fertilization.
Jump to navigation. We reviewed the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of intrauterine insemination IUI compared to intracervical insemination ICI in women who started donor sperm treatment. The first-line treatment in donor sperm treatment consists of inseminations that can be done by placing sperm inside a woman's uterus to facilitate fertilisation IUI or by inserting sperm into the vagina using a small, needleless syringe or a cervical cap ICI.
In doing so, the sperm has a shorter distance to travel with fewer obstructions along the way. The most commonly used form of artificial insemination, intrauterine insemination IUI is when the physician inserts the sperm directly into the uterus. After a physical examination and bloodwork from both partners is complete, a sperm sample is collected.
