The Australian director has removed much of the usual sets and effects and instead has opted for a minimal look, almost entirely in black and white. With her dark eye-shadow and pale make-up - plus a Sally Bowles style hat - this portrayal of Carmen evokes the spirit of larger-than-life cabaret stars, especially when she acknowledges her own murder with a knowing shrug to the audience. Even the dialogue is stripped back; there is no spoken word between the characters, apart from a narrator guiding the show along here and there.

C atalan director Calixto Bieito has a reputation for being something of a provocateur as far as his operatic stagings are concerned. So it will doubtless surprise some to discover that his production of Carmen — first seen in Barcelona inand now taken into ENO 's repertory — is a cogent, gripping piece of work, which, despite occasional moments of excess, probes Bizet's masterpiece with considerable subtlety. Much of its force derives from Bieito's understanding of the insistent nature of male sexuality.
