By Inigo Figuracion. New York has Greenwich Village. San Francisco has the Castro.
The annual parade began at 10 a. The 1. As always, dozens of colorful floats made their way through the procession.
Great area for little shops, local shopping, and restaurants a-plenty. Something to suit everyone's taste. Great Movie theater, the best popcorn.
Hillcrest is an older neighborhood which has gone through gentrification. Many streets are lined with trees. There are Craftsman homes and Mid-Century modern condominium buildings. A large ridge overlooking San Diego Bay borders the neighborhood to the west.
By Andrew Collins. Sunny and spectacularly situated San Diego is one of the great playgrounds of the West among gay and lesbian travelers. The city's once-staid downtown now abounds with hip hotels and lively restaurants, while such gay-friendly neighborhoods as Hillcrest, North Park, and University Heights are hot spots for gay clubbing and bar-hoppingdining, and shopping.
Lambda knows every nook and cranny, every pertinent gay event that ever happened here. They make the history of gay Hillcrest come alive! My experience with the Lambda Archives has taught me more than I thought possible.

When the census data is mapped, you can see a divide that may surprise those who assume Hillcrest is the local gay mecca: Lesbian couples are much more widely distributed around the county than their gay male counterparts, who tend to cluster in and around the progressive haven of Hillcrest. And Alpine has plenty of company on the list of unexpected local communities where lesbians seem to be more common than in the county as a whole. This gap is familiar to researchers, though.
Lauded for its welcoming vibe and pedestrian-friendly streets and sidewalk patios, the area's east end is marked by a towering rainbow Pride flag just off Hillcrest's main thoroughfare of University Avenue, at the corner of Normal Street. Spanning a dozen blocks west from the Pride flag along University Avenue is a colorful mix of ethnically diverse restaurants, nightclubs and acclaimed wine bars. You'll also discover home decor shops, distinctive boutiques, the Uptown District shopping plaza and the country's only openly gay brewery, Hillcrest Brewing Company. A great place to shop for local produce, arts and crafts, the market also offers a wide range of gourmet stalls with hot and cold cuisine.
