SEATTLE, April 26 - Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, has indicated he may reconsider his company's decision not to support a Washington State gay rights bill amid the growing firestorm inside and outside the company that exploded after the recent disclosure that Microsoft had changed its position on the bill. Gates, who rarely grants interviews and declined through a spokesman Tuesday to grant one to The New York Times, indicated that he was surprised by the backlash to the company's turnaround on the legislation. He also suggested that Microsoft, which had been known for decades as a corporate leader on gay rights and had supported the bill in previous years, might change course next year because of the controversy.
Same-sex marriage has been legal sinceand same-sex couples are allowed to adopt. Conversion therapy on minors has also been illegal since Several Native American tribes in modern-day Washington recognize individuals who act, behave and live as the opposite gender, now referred to as " two-spirit ".
It was only a few years back the LGBT community wanted to keep the government out of the bedroom, now they want to legislate to the rest of us how we must think about them. Is this really why we elect government officials? What kind of American is more concerned about money over the protections against discriminating another fellow American?
Same-sex marriage has been legally recognized in Washington state since December 6, On February 13,Washington Governor Christine Gregoire signed legislation that established full marriage rights for same-sex couples in the state of Washington. Opponents mounted a challenge that required voters to approve the statute at a referendumwhich they did on November 6. The law took effect on December 6, and the first marriages were celebrated on December 9.
Christine Gregoire promised to sign it. The governor is expected to do just that as soon as next week, but it is not likely to take immediate effect. Under state law, if opponents gathersignatures, the measure will be put to a public referendum before it can be enacted.
Both legislative bodies are controlled by Democrats. But the political dynamic on the issue shifted after Governor Christine Gregoire, a Democrat in her final year in office, announced last month she was backing the gay marriage bill. The vote was greeted with raucous cheers from gay couples and their supporters, and with determined looks from opponents.
The protections would extend to employment, housing, loan applications, education, public accommodations and other areas. The vote waswith every Democrat voting in favor, along with eight Republicans. Cheers and applause broke out on the House floor as the bill crossed the threshold for passage.
